Guide to KPM Bursary

LAST UPDATED: 29 May 2024

From 2012 to 2015, the KPM Bursary was offered to SPM 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 students obtained 9A+ or above. The KPM Bursary sponsored for pre-university programmes which included A Level, International Baccalaureate (IB), STPM, Matriculation and Foundation at selected colleges in Malaysia. It was guaranteed that every student who met the requirements would be offered the KPM Bursary, so there was no selection process involved.

After completing the pre-university programme under the KPM Bursary, students would be offered the Program Lepasan Bursary which sponsored for degree courses if they met the requirements. Previously, the Program Lepasan Bursary sponsored for both local and overseas universities, but since 2016, it only sponsored for local universities.

In 2016, the KPM Bursary was replaced by the Program Bursary. The Program Bursary was offered to SPM 2015 students who obtained 9A+ or above.

In 2017, the Program Bursary was replaced by the Program Penajaan 9A+. The Program Penajaan 9A+ was offered to SPM 2016, 2017 and 2018 students who obtained 9A+ or above.

In 2020, the Program Penajaan 9A+ was replaced by the Program Khas Lepasan SPM Dalam Negara. The Program Khas Lepasan SPM Dalam Negara is offered to SPM 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 students who obtained 9A+ or above. Unlike the KPM Bursary, Program Bursary and Program Penajaan 9A+, the Program Khas Lepasan SPM Dalam Negara requires students who meet the requirements to attend and pass the Student Assessment Centre (SAC).

  1. Hi, Daniel. I'm a spm 2014 candidate and a bursary holder as well. I'm choosing to study matriculation or a-level since there is no guarantee for us that we will be offered JPA scholarship after the a-level. However, if i choose matriculation, i will be given a place at IPTA at least. Is it true from what have i said n which one would you prefer?

    1. If you choose Matriculation, there is a high chance that you will get a place at IPTA, but this is not 100% guaranteed. But if you choose A Level, the chance of getting a place at IPTA is very low.

I had the same problem 2 years ago. Although for my batch we were guaranteed the JPA scholarship, JPA did not tell us about that until the last moment. In the beginning, we were told that there was no guarantee that we would be offered the JPA scholarship. As a result, my family wanted me to study Matriculation. I had started studying A Level in Taylor's College in January before my SPM results was out. I already got used to life in Taylor's and I did not want to leave my friends, so I decided to take the risk and continue with A Level under the Bursary. My family disagreed with my decision, but later I did not get the Matriculation offer so they could not force me.

    1. To get the Bursary, you must obtain 9A+ or above in SPM. 9A or 9A- will not qualify for the Bursary.

  5. Hello Daniel, so based on your case, can I assume that you paid 6 months of college fees (i.e. january till june) because Bursary can only sponsor starting from August? Is that the same for March intake students? What is your recommendation for students who have a high chance of getting good results? January intake or March intake? Hope you'll answer my questions. Thank you!!

    1. Yes, I paid 6 months of fees. March intake students will have to pay 4 months of fees from March to June. I would recommend that you enrol for the January intake. This is because for the March intake, the syllabus will be very rushed and this will be stressful.

  6. Hi daniel. Im bursary holder this yr. If the pointer for 1st sem is below 3.50, is bursary scholarship for 2nd sem going on or not? Hope you can reply to me asap thank you :)

    1. During the briefing for the bursary that I attended previously, we were told that we need to get 3.50 or above to maintain the bursary. However, on the bursary offer letter it was only stated that we cannot fail. I have never heard of cases where students had their bursary withdrawn simply because they did not get 3.50. One of my friend who is also a bursary holder got poor results (way below 3.50 but still pass) during the trial examination, but her bursary was not affected at all. So, you need not worry about this. By the way, 3.50 is equivalent to 3B in A Level, not 3A as you may have heard from some.

  7. Hi daniel. Imma 2013 spm candidate and bursary holder as well. Just wanna ask is it confirm that after we had finished pre-university programme, JPA scholarship will be offered to us automatically? What if we dont take the JPA scholarship? Because we already had another sponsor in which had agreed that they only sponsor us for the degree programme? Im totally confused rn. Looking forward for your reply. Thank you !

    1. You are guaranteed the JPA scholarship if you meet the requirements, but to get it you still have to follow the procedure to register for it. If you do not want to take the JPA scholarship, you just don't register for it. It is definitely not compulsory for Bursary holders to take the JPA scholarship.

  19. It's officially announced by JPA today. Only 250 top students with 9A+ & above in their SPM 2015 will be the last batch to be sponsored. There'll be no more bursary program in 2017 and thereafter.

  22. Hi, Daniel. I would like to ask this - Do the private universities in malaysia accept matriculation students?

    1. Most local private universities accept Matriculation.

  23. hi, Daniel. i am a bursary recipient this year. i am also offered the matriculation programme. currently, i am not sure what to pursue for my pre-u studies. i am afraid that if i go for the matriculation programme i might be at risk of being offered a course that i am not interested in for my degree. Also, for the bursary 2016 recipients, will their degree still be paid for?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I recommend that you study A level. Many local private universities give priority to students with A level, although they also accept Matriculation. The A level syllabus is a bit more difficult than Matriculation, but A level is 6 months longer so you will have more time to study. You will also have much better life in A level compared to Matriculation because Matriculation colleges have poor facilities and strict rules. Even though it is easier to get into local public universities with Matriculation, as you have said, it is possible that you may not be offered the course that you want to study.

JPA's current policy is that they will sponsor your batch for degree. There is no 100% guarantee that this policy will not change in the future, but I would say, the possibility of JPA changing this policy is vey low.

    1. Local public universities (IPTA) only accepts a very limited number of A Level students. I strongly recommend you to enroll in local private universities (IPTS) instead.
